CHAPTER 9

Morgan waltzed into Nick’s. Craig wasn’t at the door when she arrived. Another bouncer greeted her. Though not as warm as Craig, his thick neck and arms were as much a deterrent to crime as Craig’s. Morgan smiled at him as he held the door for her and mumbled “Welcome to Nick’s. I’m Devon.”

She nodded her head, stepped inside the club, and then looked around, her eyes searching for Jarrod.

“Well, if it isn’t the woman who killed my pride and spanked me good on the dance floor.” Nehemiah stood next to Morgan.

“Wow. I didn’t know you were so sensitive. Had I known, I would have only spanked you a little bit and not a lot.”

Nehemiah raised his eyebrows, then threw his head back in laughter. “I guess you told me. How are you tonight?”

“Well. And you?”

“No complaints. Looks like we’re going to pack them in tonight.”

Morgan looked around. Yes, she thought, that they were. But she was interested in one thing—Jarrod.

“Oh, he’s off tonight.” Nehemiah seemed to have read her thoughts, but she couldn’t go out like that. She looked up into his eyes. “Who’s off tonight?” She placed her manicured hand on her chest. Her heart sank and she hoped that he hadn’t seen the disappointment in her eyes. She heard him chuckled slightly before answering and she knew he wasn’t going to let her off that easy.

“My brother, Ni… I mean, Jarrod,” he replied. She watched him as he peered at her and thought that it was no big deal to mix up a name, everyone mixes up names sometimes, and she wondered why he blanched.

“Hey, I can make a mean drink. Why don’t you sit in your favorite area, and I’ll fix you a drink. Coconut rum with pineapple juice. Correct?”

Morgan nodded her head, and then walked slowly to the Sports Arena. She sat at the table she’d last shared with Tina and Mr. Johnson. She glanced around the room as her head absently bobbed to the smooth music that seeped from the large speakers. She wanted to leave—the object of her waking thoughts was nowhere to be found.

Nehemiah rushed into the office, picked up the phone and quickly dialed his brother’s phone number. When he got no answer at the home number, he called Nick’s cell phone number. Getting no answer there either, he called the home number again and left a message for Nick to call him ASAP. Nehemiah came from the office, retrieved Morgan’s drink and headed toward her table. He shook his head. If his brother got a look at this sister tonight, he’d not only tell her who he was, but would quickly make sure that no one else would step to her. As he neared, he spied some dude sitting at the table with her.

Oh, no, this one is Nick’s, Nehemiah thought. His eyes narrowed as he neared and heard the man tell Morgan that her man was a fool to let her out by herself.

“Oh, dude! My
